Become a (better) freelance writer

Published about 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hey there,

In the past few weeks, I've been thinking a lot about focus and what I want to do.

One of the questions is: Why do I have this newsletter?

This is something I'll talk about today, along with these other points:

  • Freelance job title
  • Welcome series
  • How to podcast
  • Markdown

Why This Newsletter?

I've been writing this newsletter for almost two years now and it has had several formats. It started as Top Three Thursday, a productivity newsletter related to www.topthreeguide.com.

Then, it morphed into The Unrestricted. But the Unrestricted started as a daily newsletter with writing advice.

And now... The Unrestricted is a weekly newsletter which still has some writing advice, but it's more focused on freelancing.

I'm most thankful to the people who've been here since 2020, but I know these are the people who are more interested in me than whatever I decide to share.

So how do I cater for the other people?

I think it's best for me to stay on the freelance writing course. How can I help others become (better) freelance writers?

That's the question I'll ask myself every Wednesday before I write this.

The next two points are related.

Welcome Series

I also want to take this newsletter a bit more serious from now one. One, by being more focused. Two, by "professionalising" a bit.

This morning, I got a ConvertKit Creator account for $15 per month. And I created a welcome series with 5 emails in which I share the best tools, links etc. that I use as a freelance writer.

On day 5, I share 6 paid products. (1 of my own and 5 affiliate products).

My goal is to make one sale per month, so it covers the monthly subscription cost.

Picking a Freelance Job Title

You may have noticed (hopefully not) how many times I've changed my website homepage and Twitter bio recently.

I keep struggling to figure out what I offer and for whom. I have an idea but I can't express it well. Or better, I couldn't express it well.

I'm more than a copywriter, I'm more than a content writer. I enjoy all these things. But calling myself just a "writer" is pretty lame.

So what should I call myself.

I'm thinking of a "Startup Content Strategist".

It includes my target audience, has a wider ring to it than copywriter but still feels focused.

And it sounds more expensive too, right?

Have you thought about your job title and how important it is to attract the right clients?

Because it matters. I'm hoping to attract more longer projects with this new "brand image". Still need to make the changes this time but I'll keep you posted.

Content Strategy and "How to start an interview podcast?"

One of the biggest issues promoting my business, is the type of content I create.

My article about book marketing and self-publishing got some good attention and attracts a few website visitors per day. But these aren't the people interested in my services.

The same is true for my latest post: How to start an interview podcast?

Andrew Warner, Michele Hansen and many others liked it and shared it. But again, it's not related to what I do for a living.

And still I wrote it. I needed this out of my head.

Luckily, it's gone now and I'll start focusing on content related to my business. This is good news for you too because my future posts will be more relevant to freelance writers and marketers. I'm starting with a guest post about content strategies at startups before I move into SEO.

Quick Tip : Use Markdown

Are you familiar with markdown? It's some kind of no-code to write faster.

For example, you type "# " and it converts into an h1 title or "## " for h2 etc.

Here's a full guide on how to use Markdown.

The beauty of it? It works in ConvertKit and WordPress.

Ba-bye

That's how my daughter says bye, or at least that's what we think.

See you next week, or click the link below to receive my new welcome series right now.

I made a huge mistake. I tried to make the titles of the Coffee & Pens posts clever instead of informative. I thought people would want to read the posts because of the author's name, because they liked previous C&P posts and other stupid reasons. Thanks to Andy, I realised this is BS. So I rewrote them all. This time, I tried to tell you in a few words what the articles are about and why you should read them. These are all the changes: (If you're not interested, scroll to the bottom for the...
